Reading at Wawne Primary School
The children at Wawne Primary School are encouraged to become confident and fluent readers with a good understanding. Our children develop a love of reading through quality texts, both for pleasure and for information. Our broad and balanced curriculum ensures that children listen to and read a wide variety of genres and texts, linking to the current theme where possible and to their own interests.
From EYFS, the children listen to a wide variety of engaging stories as a whole class or in small groups and have access to a vibrant and inviting reading area to allow them to choose books independently and engage in reading activities.
In KS1, children are assessed and grouped for daily Guided Reading sessions and will focus on various reading skills.
As children move in to KS2, they are encouraged to become more involved in discussions and conversations about a text during whole class reading sessions. The reading sessions will focus on key reading skills using VIPERS- Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explain, Retrieve and Summarise.
At Wawne Primary School, it is vital that we provide children with opportunities to develop and deepen their relationship with reading through providing a weekly lunchtime book club, which is run by Year 6 librarians. Children across the school are invited to share a book with a friend, read independently or be read to by an adult or peer. The children are also able to sign books out to enjoy at home with their families.
A child’s reading experience is much more than the reading book which comes home from school. Reading is happening all the time in a classroom and in school. It is taught in specific reading and English lessons but children are practising and using their reading constantly across all subjects.
A child’s reading journey begins with learning to read through our Read, Write Inc programme and moves on into reading to learn.
Parents can make the biggest difference to a child’s success as a reader by encouraging their child to read as much and as widely possible at home. Reading at home at least 3 times a week even just for 10 minutes can make all the difference to a child’s reading progress.

Reading in EYFS
To provide adequate provision for developing both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling in a phonetically plausible way and writing at length) each class teacher will provide a daily Read Write Inc lesson. These lessons enable children to read with increasing fluency, spell in a phonetically plausible way and write at length which are in line with age related expectations. Read Write Inc lessons usually last for 20 minutes and will consist of Speed sounds and a reading lesson.
To ensure children make progress in their reading all children are grouped for Read Write Inc via their reading ability. Therefore we teach reading and systematic, synthetic phonics to their stage, not age.
This ensures teaching is differentiated not only via group, but the small focus groups provide the trained members of staff with opportunities for regular assessment to meet the needs of every individual child in their group. Children develop their reading comprehension during these sessions.
Wawne Reads
Wawne Reads is a collection of recommended books which are considered to be ‘must-reads’ for everyone. The books in this collection consist of class core texts, recommended independent reads and class shared texts. Each book has been carefully chosen to stretch vocabulary, expose children to different structures and timeframes, encourage critical and analytical thinking and promote a love of reading. Following this reading spine provides equality of opportunity for all children; ensuring all pupils will leave school having had exposure to wide ranging, linguistically varied and intellectually stimulating collection of texts.
Each class has got a copy of each of the Wawne Reads. The children can take turns borrowing the books and reading them to or with their families. The books are also available to borrow from the school library.
Each pupil has been given a Wawne Reads Bookmark where they can tick off the books as they read them. Once the children have read the book, we encourage them to complete a book review for their classmates to read. We hope that reading the Wawne Reads will have an impact on reading for pleasure and enjoyment as well as helping with the skills of reading.
