At Wawne Primary School, our aim is to not only embed the themes and principles of the EYFS curriculum but to create a secure and stimulating environment that nurtures children and helps them to become life-long learners and valued members of the community. As we are a small school, EYFS children are included in many aspects of whole school life, for example assemblies, special event days and rewards. The curriculum is an appropriate mix of formal and informal teaching and learning styles which we aim to develop not only academic learning but also support social, emotional and physical development.

We provide our children with a rich, stimulating environment where they can follow their interests and explore topics in a hands-on way. Rather than just telling children facts, we invite them to ask questions, investigate and engage with materials and experiences that inspire them.
Through this approach, we encourage children to take the lead in their learning, allowing them to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Our classrooms are filled with open-ended resources, natural materials and engaging activities that spark imagination and creativity.
Children are supported by caring and attentive staff who guide them in their exploration, ask open-ended questions and provide opportunities for independent and group learning. This way, children develop a lifelong love of learning, understanding that their curiosity is valued and celebrated.
We believe that by nurturing curiosity in the early years, we set a strong foundation for a child’s future academic and personal success. This approach makes learning fun, interactive and meaningful, giving each child the opportunity to thrive in a supportive and exciting environment.
We provide provision for children in Foundation Stage 1 and 2. Children can start in our Nursery in the term after they turn 3 years old.
They move to Reception in the same academic year that they turn 5 years old.
The school day for our Reception children is 9.00am - 3.30pm
Nursery Provision
We offer full day sessions for our Foundation Stage 1 children. This option is available for both families who qualify for 30 hours of free childcare and those who wish to top up their existing 15 hours of free nursery places. Families who do not qualify for the free 30 hours can top up their 15 hours by paying £3.00 per additional hour.

The nursery children’s lunchtime will be fully supervised by a designated member of staff, who will assist them in the lunch hall while they eat. They can either bring their own packed lunch or purchase a hot meal. After lunch, they will return to the EYFS environment for the remainder of the lunchtime session, where they will be supported by another member of staff. In the afternoon, the nursery children will continue with their EYFS learning and activities, just as they do in the morning, with our usual team.
We are offering both morning and full-day sessions.
A morning session will run from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
A full day session will run from 8.50 am to 3.20 pm

Key Person
The class teacher is responsible for the well-being of all of the children in the Foundation Stage. In addition, each child is assigned a ‘key person’ who may be the teacher, a nursery nurse or a teaching assistant.
The key person’s responsibilities include:
- helping the child to become familiar with the setting.
- building a relationship with each child and their parents, working in partnership with them to ensure that the child is being cared for.
- responding sensitively to the child’s needs, feelings, ideas and behaviour.
- ensuring that the learning opportunities on offer meet the needs of each child.
EYFS Staff
Mrs Ramsey and Mrs Cocken are the Foundation Stage teachers.
Mrs Brown and Miss Kennedy are the nursery nurses and Mrs Bonnar is the teaching assistant in our Foundation Stage.
